Special Purposes
Prerequisites:
Placement test
Credit: One credit hour
Catalog Description: This
course is designed to enhance graduate level limited English proficient
students' abilities to communicate in business settings. Open to all Access
Plus 1 students
Mission: The mission of the ESL program is to help
students with limited English proficiency to acquire English language skills in
reading, writing, speaking, and listening through computer technology, along
with sufficient knowledge of American culture in order for them to succeed in
other academic courses.
Purpose: The purpose of this course is to enhance the
student's ability to communicate in business settings at the low intermediate
level.
Objectives: This course is designed so that student will
learn:
1. To speak and
understand common spoken English using contexts and topics which are directly
relevant to business or other professions.
2. To demonstrate
strategic competence in verbal and non-verbal communication to compensate for
gaps in knowledge or breakdowns in communication for other reasons.
Assessment and
General Assignments: Assignments
include listening to audio tapes, eight role-play discussions based on
readings, one pre-ESP 415 video taped interview, one post-ESP 415 video taped
interview, and two listening
comprehension tests. Pre- and post-ESP
415 interview tapes will be kept on record.
Evaluation and
Grading: The final grade will be
determined by the student's attendance, active participation, homework, eight
role-play discussions, the progress shown in the taped interviews, and two
listening comprehension tests.
