Speaking and Writing I
Prerequisites: ESP 415 or placement test
Credit: One credit hour
Catalog Description: This
course is designed to enhance graduate-level limited English proficient
students' abilities to read and write about a wide range of business topics.
Open to all Access Plus 1 and 2 students.
Mission: The mission of the ESL program is to help
students with limited English proficiency to acquire English language skills in
reading, writing, speaking, and listening through computer technology, along
with sufficient knowledge of American culture in order for them to succeed in
other academic courses.
Purpose: The purpose of this course is to enhance the
student's ability to read and write about a wide variety of business topics.
Objectives: This course is designed so that the student
will learn:
1. To increase
his/her business vocabulary
2. To read,
comprehend, and produce written business communications.
3. To understand and
utilize English grammar in the business context at the intermediate level.
Assessment and
general Assignments: Assignments
include text and workbook assignments, eight grammar tests, four written
business communications, and one final essay examination. All grammar tests, the final examination,
and one written business communication will be collected and kept on record.
Evaluation and
Grading: The final grade will be
determined by the student's attendance, active participation, homework, eight
grammar tests, four written business communications, and one final essay.
